The final result of Morisawa Type Design Competition 2012


We are pleased to announce the final result of the Morisawa Type Design Competition 2012.

From 29 countries and regions around the world, a total of 615 works(239 works for Kanji category and 376 works for Latin category) was applied.

On October 18th and 19th, the jury met in Head office of Morisawa Inc., Osaka to choose Morisawa Award and Akashi Award both for Kanji and Latin Category. Also, 1st and 2nd prize of Peopleʼs Choice were elected by voting of general public.

We would like to express our appreciation to all of you who submitted your works and joined Peopleʼs Choice.

Details about future competitions – the biennial Morisawa Type Design Competition takes place again in 2014 – will be announced in due course.

On this website, we will keep updating the related information about the competition, including an exhibition of the winning entries.

Frequently Asked Questions


How do I submit a font family?
We will accept 1 weight as 1 work(entry). in cases where you are planning to submit a font family, please obtain Work ID for each weight(or style).
At your submitting page, you can add some descriptions about your typeface. If you have other related work(s), please put its ID and name.
(e.g., This typeface was designed as a part of a family typeface. The family consists of LA0XXXXX or “name of a family” and LA1XXXXX or “name of a family”.)

How do I choose black color?
In Application Guideline(page 8), we set format as:
“0-4 Space must be white and typeface color must be black only”

To make preparation for judgement be proceeded smoothly, please refrain the use of RGB or CMY, and use K100% only. I would like to ask you to check that a halftone dot does not occur in your printed work.

The already submitted works won’t be treated as a disadvantage during the judgment. You don’t need to re-submit your work.

Do you accept my handwriting?
Yes. Please check out page 8 in Application Guideline:
“0-7 Scanned image must have resolution of at least 600 dpi. This is necessary to ensure that quality of entries can be fairly judged.”
