Morisawa Award

This award is presented to works that pursue originality and aesthetic excellence.
The competition is divided into Japanese, Latin, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Hangeul categories. Entrants are allowed to enter multiple categories, and there is no limit on the number of submissions.
Awardees will receive a certificate and a trophy, as well as an additional cash prize as a supplementary award.

  • Japanese category:
    Gold Prize; JPY 1 million (1 work)
    Silver Prize; JPY 500,000 (1 work)
    Bronze Prize; JPY 300,000 (1 work)
    Honorable Mention; JPY 50,000 (5 works)
  • Latin category:
    Gold Prize; JPY 1 million (1 work)

Fan Favorite

The winner of the Fan Favorite award will be determined through a public voting process via the web, scheduled to take place around December 2024.
This award is open to works entered in the Morisawa Award. Entry to the Fan Favorite voting is optional. Winners will be honored with a certificate and a trophy.

  • Japanese category: 1st and 2nd highest number of votes (1 work each)
  • Latin category: 1st and 2nd highest number of votes (1 work each)
  • Simplified Chinese category: 1st and 2nd highest number of votes (1 work each)
  • Traditional Chinese category: 1st and 2nd highest number of votes (1 work each)
  • Hangeul category: 1st and 2nd highest number of votes (1 work each)
Entry Sheet
Please submit your entries according to the format specifications for each category. You can download the detailed specifications as a compressed zip file from the official website.
Be aware that entries significantly deviating from the format specifications will be considered disqualified and will not be eligible for judging. The eligibility or disqualification of submissions will be determined by the secretariat, based on these submission guidelines and the separately established format specifications.
How to Enter
Submit your entries via the official website and upload your work files (submission opens on May 14, 2024).
There is no entry fee. Submissions by mail will not be accepted.
  • Register as a entrants on the official website.
  • Obtain an ‘Entry ID’ and include it on your work.
  • Submit your work through the official website.
Schedule
Submission Period: May 14, 2024 to August 29, 2024 (JST).
Fan Favorite Voting: Scheduled for around December 2024.
Results Announcement: Expected around February 2025.

*The winners and finalists of each category will be announced on the official website, official social media platforms, and the Morisawa corporate website. Following the announcement of the judging results, works other than those mentioned above will not be published.

Eligibility
Open to individuals or groups. There are no specific restrictions regarding nationality or other criteria.
Employees of Morisawa Inc. and its group companies are not eligible to enter.
Conditions and Restrictions for Entries (Prohibited Matters)

All entries are considered to comply with these conditions upon submission, and it is assumed that they meet these criteria. Disqualification may occur even after the results have been announced if it is discovered that an entry does not comply with the following conditions.

Conditions:

  • Only unpublished (*) original works are accepted.
    (*) The following are not considered as published:
    • Designs announced on university or educational institution websites.
    • Designs shared on personal blogs or social media.
    • Designs mentioned in third-party interviews.

Restrictions (Prohibited Matters):

  • Imitations of existing typefaces (*) are not allowed.
    (*) For example: reusing or tracing existing typefaces, or designs that closely resemble the structure of existing typefaces.
  • Fonts that are available for purchase or download, regardless of whether they are for commercial or non-commercial use, paid or free.
  • Works that have been licensed to others (including the lending or transferring of copyright or usage rights, or the provision of licenses), regardless of whether for payment or free.
  • Works that are currently under negotiation with others.
  • Works that infringe on the rights of others.
  • Publicly revealing the entry ID in association with the author before the announcement of the judging results.

Rights:

The copyright of the submitted works remains with the respective entrants.
However, Morisawa Inc. will have exclusive negotiation rights for the commercialization of all winning entries for a period of 6 months from the date of the results announcement. During this period, entrants of the winning works may not engage in any negotiations, contracts, memorandums, arrangements, etc., regarding the commercialization or licensing of these winning works with any third party other than Morisawa Inc. without written permission from Morisawa Inc.

Morisawa Inc. also reserves the right to negotiate the commercialization of non-winning entries. However, this does not prevent third parties other than Morisawa Inc. from negotiating with the entrants regarding the commercialization of these non-winning entries.

Entrants are deemed to agree to the following regarding their submissions:

  • We cannot accommodate requests for modification or return of the submitted work files.
  • For entries submitted for Fan Favorite, part or all the work may be published on the official website.
  • For winning entries, part or all the work may be published in press releases, award collections, exhibitions, etc.

Regarding Prizes:

If subject to withholding tax, the organizer will handle the withholding procedures. Entrants may be required to prepare necessary documents for these procedures, and it may take some time for the funds to be transferred.

Other (Disclaimer)
In the event that any third-party claims, including but not limited to, allegations of imitation or infringement of rights, are made concerning the submitted works, the entrants shall address such claims and ensure that no harm comes to the organizer. Furthermore, in such cases, the entrants shall cooperate with the organizer to resolve any such claims or disputes upon the organizer’s request.
While the competition is conducted with the utmost care by the organizer, the organizer shall not be liable for any damages suffered by the entrants in relation to their submission or participation in the competition, except in cases of intentional misconduct or gross negligence by the organizer.
Any matters not specified in this entry requirement shall ultimately be determined at the discretion of the organizer.
