Akashi Award has been renewed with a concept of giving different themes each time and the award is given to the work with best quality and idea followed by the theme.
The 2019’s theme is “Variable Fonts.”
Variable Fonts are the fonts designed utilizing the technology called OpenType Font Variations, which newly introduced in OpenType 1.8.

Variable Fonts enables to work as if it carries multiple weights and styles with a single font. At Type Design Competition, we decided to choose this theme for Akashi Award as a gesture to challenge the new technology.
